Laura Bridges, co-owner of Halloween & More in Ashville, NC, said this Halloween season was “definitely comparable to last. There didn’t seem to be as big of a push at the end, maybe because Halloween fell on a Sunday, but it was a good season.”
She expects that next season this sales trend will continue. “I imagine that a Monday Halloween will be similar to Sunday. However, it might be kind of nice to have it on a weekday, because adults can still go to parties on the weekend and trick or treat with their kids [on Monday.]”
This season, the best-selling adult brands were Leg Avenue, California Costumes and Rubie’s, with Forum Novelties and FunWorld also performing well.
Accessories continued to trend up, Bridges said. “I think people were definitely cutting back [on full costumes] and accessorizing more, which has been the trend for the last couple of years.”
Bridges added that there is still a void in the market for well-fitting, appealing plus-size costumes. “I think the market still needs better plus sizes; for some reason what we carry is not always what the plus-size customer is looking for,” she said. “Dreamgirl does the best in plus sizes, I believe. But there are a lot of people who just can’t wear any of the costumes because they don’t fit right, [and complain] that the styles are not as exciting as the [standard sized] lines.”
