According to David Boswell, buyer of Boy Next Store in Atlanta, GA: “Customers are still looking for a bargain. They do look for a combination of quality and price, but sales are price-driven, especially when it comes to men’s underwear.” His advice for anyone trying to make a profit in the category is “try to listen to your customers, know what they want and what works [...] retailers need to find brands that aren’t in the big stores.” Boswell said that Boy Next Store gravitates towards “sexy brands that fit an athletic customer.” He described the store’s typical customer as “an urban male in his 20’s to 30’s who is body-conscious and sexually conscious.” Best-selling sizes are S and M. Best-selling brands are the tried-and-true 2(x)ist, as well as recently-added Nasty Pig. Andrew Christian, Go Softwear and Just Us Boys are also popular. In recent trends, he said that vendors are creating styles that are more “ergonomically cut for comfort, style and fit.” He sees super low-rise styles as going off-trend.
