On Feb. 14, 2003, Peregrine Honig and former co-owner Corrie VanAusdal gave Kansas City dwellers a Valentine's Day gift that keeps on giving-a new lingerie shop, perfect for Midwestern lingerie lovers.
Birdies Panties is a 120-square-foot (including a 75-square-foot dressing room) boutique, but recently, Honig snatched up a 300-square-foot space located directly next door. The new space will be opened by the spring, said Honig.
Similar to a 1930's candy or ice cream shop, Birdies Panties displays its wares-here, it's lingerie-in candy drawers, and houses refurbished furniture in walnuts and stained woods. The glass on the door is etched with vintage hardware, and the floor is tiled in tiny baby blue squares, while the walls are layers of chipped paint sealed with an acrylic coat.
Honig, who originally opened the store with VanAusdal, was only 25 when the shop opened, and although she didn't have much retail experience (she is originally a fine artist) the two friends put their heads together and birthed something "exciting and a bit racy for Midwesterners," said VanAusdal.
Close to celebrating its 6th birthday, Birdies Panties boats some of the hottest brands in the industry, allowing customers to spend an average of $75 per visit. Brands in the mix include the newly added Letters of Marque and Marlies Dekkers, Zimmerman and Chio Swimwear. Popular items are boy shorts and vintage-cut lingerie sets and swimwear.
