(Filed Under Financial and General Interest News). For the second quarter ended August 1st, 2009, teen retailer Hot Topic, Inc. cited a decrease in total sales of $5.4 percent: to $157.8 million from $166.8 million for last year’s second quarter. Comparable store sales declined 7.7 percent.
For the retailer’s Hot Topic chain, net sales dropped 6 percent, and comparable store sales were down 7.5 percent compared to .6 percent last year. For its Torrid chain for plus-sized teens, net sales dropped 4 percent and comparable store sales dropped 8.4 percent compared to 2.1 percent last year.
At the end of the second quarter, the company operated 679 Hot Topic stores and 156 Torrid stores compared to 684 Hot Topic stores and 158 Torrid stores at the end of last year’s second quarter.
