(Filed Under wholesale Lingerie News). Brooklyn Fox, the famous lingerie store in the heart of that neighborhood, is for sale. But it’s not what you think.
“Yes, we were affected by the pandemic,” owner Isadora Schoenberg told BODY. “But it didn’t put us on the ropes. Sales did take a dip, mainly because we were closed for several months, but since October have been beating some historical monthly revenue. I have pressing family obligations which are turning my attention away from a business that would otherwise thrive even more under an attentive owner.”
“Founded in 2008, Brooklyn Fox was and still is the only lingerie store in the heart of Williamsburg,” she continued. “And Williamsburg is one of the most affluent and fashionable neighborhoods in Brooklyn, filled with cutting edge boutiques, top-reviewed restaurants, influential art galleries and tons of hip bars, cafés and clubs.”
“My store is on the corner of North 6th and Bedford Avenue, which is Brooklyn’s longest and most prominent thoroughfare. When I first opened, the neighborhood’s demographics consisted of artists in their early 20’s living in illegal lofts,” Schoenberg explained. “A couple of years later when the zoning laws changed high-rises were erected all over the neighborhood and the population skyrocketed. Condos in Williamsburg start around $1 million. Because of the shift from burgeoning artists to a more affluent demographic who work mostly in creative fields, we’ve attracted a higher price point customer. While the demographic has changed Williamsburg is still a coveted neighborhood with an artsy vibe. It commands higher rent than many neighborhoods in Manhattan and even with the higher rents, professionals choose to live here and commute to the city for work.”
Indeed, according to a recent study by NYU, the combined Williamsburg and Greenpoint neighborhoods now enjoy a median household income of $78,069, about 26% more than citywide median household income.
“In addition to the celebrity set, our customer consists of the new moms and have discretionary income, creatives in their 20s, 30s and 40s who are looking for both practical and sexy items.”
Brooklyn Fox currently offers a mix of luxury labels, cutting edge fashion brands and everyday basics. It has a reputation for offering the trendiest designers, and wholesalers have been known to cite their presence in Brooklyn Fox as testament to just how fashionable they are.
“We sell everything from sexy Bordelle strappy cage bras to maternity wear and nursing bras. We do very well with fashion bras, as well as swimwear during the warmer months. As of now there aren’t other options for swim in Williamsburg, so thats been a boon for us now that people are traveling again.” Brands include: Aubade, Simone Perele, Cosabella, Else, Bordelle, Panache, Samantha Chang, Lou, Maison Lejaby, Myla, Studio Pia, Clo, Fille d’Oh, Spanx and Only Hearts. Swim labels include: Shan, Onia, Solids and Stripe, Who What Wear and Oye.
A recent addition was the Brooklyn Fox house brand. “We started with one style of bra and two styles of panties. The collection sold well and was highly profitable, but we held back expanding the collection last year because of the pandemic. On initial sales of $30,673.35 we made a profit of $26,118.60. Nice margin!!”
Over the years Brooklyn Fox has been favorably reviewed in BODY and other media. In 2016. The Best of Intima, after considering all candidates from across the country, presented its “Best of Intima’s Choice” award to Brooklyn Fox, honoring it as one of the most accomplished independent retailers in the field of intimate apparel, beachwear and loungewear in the U.S. and Canada.
