Kilo Brava is a recently launched label from experienced lingerie designer Kristen Bear that will exhibit for the first time at the Curve shows in New York and Manhattan Beach, California in February.
“I decided to create my own brand because I felt like the market was missing a mid-priced brand focused on luxury and inclusivity that was attainable to enough people,” she told BODY.
“Working in the industry in both luxury as well as mass market intimates really gave me a full picture of needs & wants coming from customers overall. Kilo Brava was created in January 2019, after I left my position as Design Director [at Cosabella] to begin the development process. We launched the brand in early October 2019, two days after giving birth to my second baby.”
In addition to almost six years at Cosabella, Bear spent over three years at Ariela & Associates International as a designer on the Material Girl, L.E.I. intimates and So Intimates collections, according to her Linkedin profile.
“I have been in the intimate apparel industry for a long time and have developed private label and collaborations with brands like Reformation, Shopbop, Revolve, Paul & Joe Paris, Neiman Marcus, Saks, Free People, Urban Outfitters, Stitchfix and many more,” she explained. “I have so much passion in the industry and product, so after many years of cultivating experience and craft managing teams, traveling to factories for development etc.” she decided to launch herself.
According to Bear, Kilo Brava is already sold “on our e-commerce site (www.kilobrava.com), to boutiques all over the U.S., one boutique in Canada, and online at coedition.com and macys.com.”
The offering is extensive. “The collection is divided into groups ranging from casual to luxe in order to cover a wide range of needs and wants in the many of the modern day woman,” she began.
“The Rib Collection, comprised of seven styles, is made with a super soft, brushed, stretch rib fabric. Each piece has gold hardware and is designed in trend forward, but easy silhouettes. The Underwire Bralette has been a best seller so far, offering the comfort and ease of a bralette, but with wire for extra support and currently fits a 30A all the way up to 40DD. Our High-Leg Thong is the next best seller in this collection, which sits high at the natural waist/legs with a wide brushed elastic and the high cut of the panty makes legs look super elongated. Lounge around at home, use as your every day intimates pieces, or even use the bodysuit and corset as ready-to-wear styles and pair with your fave jeans.”
“The Lace Collection is airy and feminine, but has a bold twist. Each of the five pieces is made with super lightweight and sheer corded eyelash lace and has contrast satin trim to make each style pop. The silhouettes in the collection have something for everyone. The best selling silhouette in this collection is the Teddy because it is very flattering and has an amazing price point. Aside from the teddy, this collection offers two bras and two panties. Another favorite is the Uniwire Cami Bra which creates an amazing push-up effect with zero padding, zero lining and is called a “Cami Bra” because when wearing with a cami, the lace peeks out.”
“The Embroidery Collection is made with sheer hand-rendered embroidery, developed in small batches for Kilo Brava. These pieces are strong, bold, and beautiful. The boning, straps, and underwires are encased in satin leaving no detail undone. For Fall 2020, we developed a new embroidery pattern called Wild Roses that is multicolored, and includes sequins for that extra wow-factor. We also have developed new silhouettes including a Mini-Slip in a baby doll style with a chiffon skirt as well as a coordinating Robe, inspired by 60’s nightwear. The Bodysuit and Corset styles are meant to be seen and are the perfect innerwear as outerwear pieces. This collection is our most special & luxe intimates group.”
Bear continued, “The Satin Collection is made with simulated silk charmeuse that feels like butter on your skin. We sourced this fabric because the fibers are just as thin and soft as silk, but the care is much easier and there’s no harm to silkworms. The fabric is made from post-consumer fibers making it eco friendly. Not to mention that the printed styles are digitally printed and use about 85% less water than traditional printing methods. You can put these pieces in the washer/dryer and they do not wrinkle very easily or shrink like silk would. This collection is a bit of a wide range with eight styles, and very focused on sleep/loungewear as outerwear as well. There are classic long and short PJ sets (best-sellers), backless slips, and just added for FW20, kimono robes, a wrap PJ set, and a new teddy silhouette. The prints in this collection are fun, whimsical, but very wearable and are inspired by vintage home interiors often with animals & florals. The satin collection is made to mix and match and merchandises beautifully with all the intimates groups.”
The designer noted that “all styles are currently offered in sizes S-XXL (fitting sizes 4-22) and we are hoping to expand immediately as we grow.”
Retail prices points for the groups: “The Rib Collection: panties retail at $14.50, underwire bralette at $28.00, bodysuit at $ 34.00. The Lace Collection: panties retail at $17.00, underwire bra at $32.50. The Embroidery Collection: panties retail at $18.00, corset at $42.00, bodysuit at $75.00. The Satin Collection: mini slip at $60, PJ sets from $98.00.”
Bear emphasized that the line is “made with inclusivity and attainability in mind while having a luxury feel so we do not want any sort of pretentious feeling around the brand. We are in some high-end boutiques and well as some more casual.” She continued, “There are lots of reasons why retailers should be excited about Kilo Brava: the price point is amazing for the quality and styles offered, the product is unique and stands out, the collection is size inclusive, the brand is ethical and is created by a woman for women. Bonus- the owner has lots of experience with and is easily able to create private label collections & collaborations with fast lead times & fantastic pricing.”
She added, “In intimates and loungewear, the shift toward spending more time at home and a quality over quantity mindset drives the need for cozy but stylish cross-over pieces. Women desire items that are versatile, taking them from a day of working from home, at the office, and maybe to an event in the evening. Much of the collection is made to mix and match for this reason and even the bras are made to peek out from a camisole or blazer.”
