Jerry Beck, President Of Charades Costumes

(Filed Under wholesale Costume News). Jerry Benjamin Beck, president of the Charades costume company, passed away June 1.

A company announcement and tribute reported that Beck was “born in Spokane, WA on 11/19/1943 and moved to California in 1969, where he founded an apparel company called “Collars and Cuffs”.  Jerry soon migrated to the Halloween industry and introduced some of the earliest textile costumes for Halloween. Jerry continued to design and create new trends in costumes as Halloween continued to grow and evolve until it became the industry that we know today.

“Jerry founded California Costume Collections in 1991 and finally in 2000 partnered with Rubie’s Costume Company to introduce the rebirth of CHARADES COSTUMES to the industry.

“Anyone who met Jerry immediately realized that they were talking to very unique individual. Jerry was the epitome of a self made man and one of the “True Icons of The American Halloween Industry” Jerry was a unique individual who possessed a seemingly endless knowledge of every single facet of the Halloween costume market. From inspiration, conception, design, construction and even marketing, Jerry really knew it all. I think that if you looked up the word “Garmento” in Webster’s dictionary, you would probably find a picture of Jerry Beck to define the meaning of the word.

“Jerry was the type of man who always “said what he thought and thought what he said”. Jerry never hesitated to explain why he was right and you were wrong no matter if you were a vendor, a customer, a buyer, a student or a college professor of costume arts.

“At Charades, Jerry nurtured and trained a staff dedicated to his traditions and who shared his vision of design and manufacturing quality. This staff is led by Jerry’s wife of many years, Mrs. Jamei Beck (Purchasing and Sourcing) Charlie Santilena (Sales) Belinda Toro (Operations) Alma Hernandez (Administrations) and Sayra Cisneros (Production). We are all deeply saddened by the passing of our founder, while at the same time we could not be more proud of what he has accomplished. The staff at Charades is united in our determination to continue Jerry’s tradition of quality design and manufacturing which he established as the centerpiece of the Charades’ reputation.

“Jerry, a true Icon of the Industry; was a mentor to many, a husband, a father figure and a friend. He will be greatly missed by all of us, but his legacy and traditions will live on.”
