Marks & Spencer Returns to France

(Filed Under retail Lingerie News). U.K. retail giant Marks & Spencer Group PLC returned to France with the opening of a flagship location on the famed Avenue des Champs Elysées.

In 2001, Marks & Spencer abruptly closed its 18 existing French stores, resulting in job losses for over 1,700 employees and a fine for former company C.E.O. Luc Vandevelde. Its first French location in over a decade is a 15,000-square-foot, three-level store that offers women’s clothing, lingerie and food. Current C.E.O. Marc Bollard and model/actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley were present at the opening.

M&S has signed leases for three additional full-line stores near Paris and is currently in talks for an additional two locations. The company operates over 1,000 stores, the majority of which are in the United Kingdom.
