(Filed Under Retailer News). Q&A with Mike Abbott, owner, president & buyer of The Poster Hut, a 2,800-square-foot store in Atlanta.

Number of stores: 1

Square footage: 2,800

Year opened: 1967

Amanda Torres Price, BODY: Describe your store.

M.A.: Our boutique has a quaint feel to it because it was converted into a retail space from an old house. Once inside, you’ll see that it is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. We offer a variety of departments for today’s modern shopper. Those departments include artwork and photography from local and regional artists; a fantastic greeting card area that includes a greeting card for almost every occasion you can dream up; bachelorette and party novelties; dance CDs; home accessories; leather; fetish; adult items and DVDs; and clothing and accessories which include an extensive underwear department for men and women; and, yes, we even still carry some posters!

A.T.P.: What makes your store special?

M.A.: Poster Hut is noted as being a formidable establishment in Atlanta. We’ve been in business for 43 years. The reason we’re successful is because we give great customer service, we know what our customers want and we move with the times. When we opened in 1967, we did carry just posters, black lights and incense. As time has moved on, so have we. We have added departments, but we were able to still hold on to the special quirkiness that makes us special and unique. We never thought about changing out store’s name because we have such a strong following that we didn’t want to mess with that.

A.T.P.: What brands are important to your store?

M.A.: In underwear we carry Schultz and Dirty Fukker from London; Unico; Male Power; Colt; Nasty Pig; Priape; The-Tee; WildmanT; Pistol Pete; Magic Silk for women; Ajaxx63; and we are very proud to be the only retailer in the U.S. that carries Tribe, which is out of Australia. We opt to carry brands that are trendy and unique. Our customers know that we offer merchandise that can’t be found anywhere else and that’s why they visit us. Brands we have carried but dropped are 2xist; Cin2; Rips; Jocko; Punto Blanco; and Andrew Christian.

A.T.P.: What is your price range?

M.A.: Our prices range from $10 to $65 and our sizes range from XS to XL.

A.T.P.: What does your average customer spend per visit?

M.A.: It varies, but I’d say the average sale is usually around $20 to $25.

A.T.P.: Who is your customer base made up of?

M.A.: Our clientele is very broad. Because of how long our store has been open and the variety of merchandise that we offer, our customers are from all walks of life; gay and straight men and women, couples, old and young. No kids, though. Because we offer some adult items, you have to be 18 to enter the store.

A.T.P.: What is your typical customer size?

M.A.: Our most popular size is M. We always buy more of that size than any other and we still sell out of it first.

A.T.P.: What trends are popular among your customers?

M.A.: The traditional brief, the jock and the square-cut brief.

A.T.P.: What other information would you like to share?

M.A.: If you are in the Atlanta area, you need to visit our store. We offer something for everyone. Come see why ours is a business that has been serving our community for over 43 years. We are a very unique boutique.
