NPD Releases Holiday Predictions

(Filed Under Fashion News). The NPD Group Inc. is once again predicting that discount stores will see the highest traffic this holiday season.

54 percent of the 2,003 consumers who completed the marketing research company's online holiday survey said they will shop for gifts at discount stores, followed by 35 percent who said they will shop online. Also on the top 10 list were department stores in fourth place; outlet stores in eighth; clothing specialty stores in ninth; and off-price stores in 10th.

Aside from value and price, survey participants said that the convenience of a retailer's location, quality of products and free shipping offers will also play a role in where they shop.

NPD also found that consumers plan to do their research before buying this year. “44 percent of consumers told NPD they plan to look around for the best price and value before they buy, which could benefit online sales,” Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst of NPD, said. “As consumers 'pre-search' by scouring websites for the best prices and deals, they will likely discover that shopping online offers not only competitive prices but a whole lot more convenience.”
