Sara’s Secret Generates Controversy

(Filed Under Fashion News). Sara’s Secret/Condoms To Go is generating a slew of controversy in Texas. According to several local reports, the retailer’s I-35 billboard—which reads “Stop Vegetable Abuse,’ above an image of a giant, frowning cucumber—has many parents and churchgoers up in arms about its provocative message, with some even demanding the retailer take it down. Sara’s Secret/Condoms To Go runs 12 stores throughout the state, all carrying sexy lingerie and adult novelties.

A February 16th article on Nbcdfw.com reported that at least one parent described the billboard as offensive. However, Gary Krupkin, senior vice president and general counsel of Sara’s Secret/Condoms To Go, told BODY that just many people have reacted positively to the billboard, with it driving traffic into stores. According to Krupkin, sales at the store nearest the billboard tripled the day after it went up, with the retailer also experiencing an excellent Valentine’s Day season.

"Our two key words for our advertising campaigns are entertaining and edgy, which this billboard certainly is. It has really taken on a life of its own," he said. "We will keep the campaign for a bit. We are thinking of making the cucumber our own Geico Gecko, of sorts."
